Sara
Ga Eun was hiding something, but she wasnât about to pry. The woman had opened her home to them. If she wanted to keep a few things private, so be it. Sara turned in the bed, her body sinking into the soft pads hidden beneath the blankets. Her eyes fell on the empty space where Korben should be.
She was clean, freshly clothed and in a comfortable bed for the first time in what felt like years, yet her mind still couldnât quiet down and her body longed for Korbenâs warmth. Sheâd only known him for a short time, but she already couldnât fall asleep without him.
That was the beginning of insanity, wasnât it?
Sara looked at the empty space beside her. All night, thoughts of Korben had simmered in the back of her mind. He was always there, almost like a presence. Like an obsession. But how could she not be obsessed?
He protected her.
He put himself in harmâs way for her.
Other women had fallen in love with men who did way less.
But he isnât a man.
Good point.
He was an alien. Another species entirely.
And what if he didnât rescue you? What if he kidnapped you to hand you over to the Heronas?
Another good point.
And one she couldnât prove. Asking Korben directly was out of the picture. She could ask Ga Eun to interpret, but that didnât appeal. She wanted Korben to open his mouth and explain to her in words she could understand. She wanted to look him in the eyes when he answered.
Had he betrayed her?
Would he?
And if the answer was no, what did that mean? Could she make such a big leap from normal girl to wife of an insanely hot Plutonian?
She thought of her sister, of how intensely Janet had chased after her boyfriend. That neediness stemmed from their rough childhoods. Things had been tough. They had a mother who was always working. Seedy men whoâd come in and out of their rundown apartment. No money for basic needs.
When she saw Janet falling in love with a man who seemed to care for, cherish and protect her as much as she deserved, Sara was ecstatic. But, in the end, that man had only wanted to use her sister. Janet was heartbroken when she found out he was cheating and that led to a fatal, tragic choice.
Sara dug her fingers into the sheets. She didnât want to experience the pain Janet had. She didnât want to be made a fool of. What if Korben was just using her? What if she gave him her all only to have her heart crushed?
Just then, she heard a light rustling sound. Sara glanced up and saw a broad silhouette. Her heart started beating faster and, before sheâd seen his face, she knew it was Korben.
He stepped closer and the moonlight fell from the window and sliced over his broad shoulders and square chin. His blue skin seemed to glow with an otherworldly sheen. When he shifted slightly, she saw the gashes and welts on his back where heâd been flogged by the acid rain.
